Eleven

As Diana perused the archive’s shelves, Zerne flexed his hand, missing hers. Perhaps he’d once again said too much, been too bold and revealing, and come dangerously close to scaring her. However, he couldn’t stop himself from revealing what was in his heart, each piece of his soul a shard of fragile glass he hoped she would come to treasure.

Could this mortal woman come to love him as he grew to adore her?

Of the humans who’d crossed his path, including his shepherds, Diana was the first to probe him with questions, to inquire about the existence of other beings like him. From the way she looked at him, not with fear or pity, but with wide-eyed interest, he believed her curiosity and caring for him were genuine.

Would that alone be enough to free him from this curse?

The worry needled him. She herself admitted she was a scholar; he’d had shepherds of that mindset before. Perhaps her questions were to satisfy her curiosity, not to learn more about the inner workings of his being, even though he knew he’d share anything about him should she only ask.

Everything, save for the curse. His forced imprisonment, and the key to release him, needed to be kept secret from her. Her love for him, he believed, needed to be genuine, not coerced, and certainly not petitioned from her. To have her regard him as pathetic was an indignity he would not tolerate.

“You said there are others like you?”

Diana’s clear, rich voice shattered the silence that hung between them. He turned in the chair, adjusting his wings so their backs faced the fire, warming their delicate skin. Shuddering at the memory of her touching the flesh of his wing, he tamped down his primal response and responded, “Yes, there are other gods.”

There was a rustling of paper punctuated by quiet gasps. Zerne smiled to himself, pleased that his collection could bring her joy. If that was all she would want from him, even that was worth it to him.

She emerged from the stacks laden with scrolls and books tucked under her arms. Zerne tried to get out of his chair and assist her, but she shook her head, muttering, “I’ve got it, I’ve got it.” Settling into the stone chair next to his, Diana arranged the scrolls on her lap and shoved the books on either side of her hips. Closing her eyes and sighing with absolute pleasure, she turned to him and said, “If there are other gods, where are they? How is it you’re here and there has been no reporting of godly sightings?”

He knelt before her and searched among the pile of scrolls on her lap; finding the cerulean painted on the interior of the scroll, he pulled it from the pile and carefully unrolled it. A monk who had come to the cavern after being forcibly removed from his monastery had painted what Zerne had described to him.

Diana held on to his shoulder as she leaned down from the chair to get a closer look at the scroll.
